So I put my 28MM carbs on in place of the old 26MM's. Now it looks like the petcock lands straight on top of the carb. Unless I'm being a retard, which is possible. I'm pretty sure the tank is set where it belongs but I'm not positive. Any input would be helpful.

Here's a link to a pic, couldnt figure out how to resize it again so, yeah.

That would be a vacuum actuated petcock. The only way to use it with the Z1 carbs is to run vacuum off the sync port on the carb holder. Problem is, gas is always down there so you will have to turn a carb holder over and remount it so it doesn't get gas in the sync port. The BEST answer would be to buy a Pingel adapter plate and a new petcock. The adapter plate and petcock can be had for about $40 (z1enterprises.com) if you get the Drag Specialties style petcock.

It looks like the old Z1 28s are shaped different at the back making them closer to the petcock than the original 26s to me. I don't even know for sure if a Pingle will help you there. It may hit the carbs as well. I can't help you, but will add if you do happen to get the vaccuum petcock to fit somehow and want to run a vaccuum line down to one of your sync ports there is no need to turn it upside down. Once the engine is running vaccuum will suck any residual gas right out of the line and work the vaccuum petcock just fine. I've run a 1977 KZ650 this way for over 30,000 miles. Georges idea of turning one over would be better yet, but not necessary.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

i had same problem on my gpz1100 tank.
when i went from fuel injection to bs34's
i cut out pet cock flange and moved it back, and welded it back in place.
then patched the old location with a metal plate.

Thanks for all responses! I'm having bigger problems with the engine now so this whole project will have to wait but I'll keep the options in mind.

That sounds like a plan to me too. Except, maybe put a plug in the old flange, drill a hole in the right location for a new flange and weld in place.
