Usually the carbs (not always) can be identified by the tops and bottoms.
The top of the picture shows the TM style carb lids, the bottom shows the RS style carb lids. The bottom carb on the right is a HS40 (Harley- chrome top). Sudco aslo list this as a TM40.This makes it more confusing than it needs to be.

Usually the bottoms of the carbs can identify the carb series (not always again). Usually the location of the accel pump tells what series they are (not always)
Top of the pic is the TM style (the very top single carb is a Yamaha non accelerator pump carb). The accel pump is located towards the engine on the set of carbs on the top left (it has a small peice of black tape stuck to it on the rack of carbs, the non accel carb has this blocked off).
The bottom of the pics is the RS series (the set on the left is a snowmobile/ GT 750 set with out the accelerator pump- you can see where the accle pump would be located- where the hole is)
The bottom left carb shows the RS Style accel pump (it is a HS40 / TM 40).

Using this information, you can go back and say that the single carb that Z1109RFin posted is not a TM but a RS series. Sudco shows this carb in their book as the TM 36.
They really need to standardize their carbs to make it easier to identify them.

Also seems that one id-point could be that in TM´s the slide linkage faces forward ie towards engine and in RS-models the linkage is facing backwards. Interesting and thanks for the info FishB)
