The Sudco Mikuni Tuning Manual 4th Edition lists Standard Jetting Specifications for Mikuni VM29 Smoothbore Carbs as follows:

Honda CB750 thru '78 --- Carb Model VM29-A2

Kawasaki KZ650, 900, 1000 --- Carb Model VM29-A7

Suzuki GS 750, 1000 --- Carb Model VM29-A12

Sorry I don't know about the physical differences among the models A2, A7 and A12 -- perhaps it refers to the mounting bracket (holding the four carbs together) designed to fit the particular bike involved. Guessing maybe the three brands have different measurements between bore centers. My experience is limited to the Z1.

Here's an excerpt from the Z1E link shown below --

We have included the Honda CB750 settings as a reference. You will notice the similarity of setup - so.... if you can find a set of 29mm carbs off a CB750, they should work on a Z1. The same is not so true with smoothbores setup for the Suzuki GS range. The slide cutaway is different (2mm) - yes, you can still buy new slides, but they are expensive.

The HOnda CB750 application requires special mounting adapters to get the carbs to line up with the intake manifolds on the Hondas. For most Suzuki's the carbs came with the very rich idle settings of #25 pilots and the 2.0mm slide cutaways. Many of the GS owners running the VM29's do run the 1.5mm slide cutaway found on the Z1/KZ's.

so basically you just need to rejet the gs carbs to work on a kz if it has the gs slide cutaway right?

FWIW - I wouldn't bat an eye over using the a 2.0 slide in a KZ, especially if it's a built motor with a ported head. I prefer them over the 1.5 slide.

In general, the #25 pilot is way too rich. Depending on the state of tune a #20 or in some cases a 17.5 are what you want.

If you get a deal on the Suzuki carbs, grab 'em, swap pilots, put the needle on the 3rd groove for a stock motor, probably 2nd grove for anything with cams or a ported head....toss in a #125 main and hit the street for a test ride....you'll be in the ball park for sure.

If by some chance you're still running a points ignition, then make absolutely certain your timing is correct before you start any jetting process.

The only thing with the 29's is the synch adjusters are a little tricky until you get the feel for them.

While we're talking 29's, there's something I'd like to bring up. I've read some articles on the net regarding their performance or more appropiately, lack of good street manners....IT's PURE HOG WASH!

They work great on street applications. You're not bolting them on the bike to run around at 3000RPM anyway....

well, i thought i had troubles with mine (turns out i did not!!) it ended up being a weak ignition system. i was running original stock coils and new points..wasn't the carbs at all. so i guess i will sell them to finance a new ignition system. i have a set of vm28's to fall back on. i can live with that.
