Head torque question

I was advised to check/re-torque the head. Is it recommended that the nut be backed off slightly and then re-torque? TIA

Yes, back off just enough to get the nut moving, then switch directions.  The nuts may stick, and give off a loud crack noise.  Don't use a delicate torque wrench, the shock may break the mechanism.  A beam type would be safe.
