Took top off
13 Oct 2025 18:59 - 14 Oct 2025 05:43
Okay I took the top half of the engine off I had a oil leak
I knew there was a problem with all the soot coming out from the reeds
no the barrel cylinders all are beautifully nice and smooth no scratches nothing the bottom of the piston looks brand new or I'm on all of them but the problem is I'm trying to figure out why I got so much carbon buildup on top of the Pistons I don't have a picture of the valves under the head but you can imagine what they look like by looking at these pictures of the Pistons

That's not at all bad. Looks pretty normal. If it were bad it'd be black and thick with soot.
Give it a decoke and reassemble.

Looks normal to me. Change your valve seals and clean things up.

I want to thank you guys I was worried but Benjamin ran great only a little oil leak was the problem and a little chattering under the valve covers I thought was tappets but I believe whoever reassembled it did not put the gaskets on the reeds and that I believe when they chatter is allowing Blow by back and getting all that soot but that's my opinion because when I took it apart there was no gaskets and the gasket kit came with a gasket for the reeds soThank you
now my plan was to relapse the valves clean them up put new rings on it and valve guides and valve guide seals anyway only real questions I got is how the Reeds go in which way do they open down or up because I believe something's wrong there too also I have to take it all the way down to nothing because when I disassembled it there were two washers missing from the head bolts and I think that's where the leak was coming from I know I didn't drop them in the engine but I have to check so I have to take all the way down to the crank I see if my magnets can pick up anything any suggestions how I can find out if I dropped anything down there

14 Oct 2025 07:28It's easy to throw money at these old girls but makes no sense to spend for the sake of it, diagnose and measure first (you will save a significant amount)I want to thank you guys I was worried but Benjamin ran great only a little oil leak was the problem and a little chattering under the valve covers I thought was tappets but I believe whoever reassembled it did not put the gaskets on the reeds and that I believe when they chatter is allowing Blow by back and getting all that soot but that's my opinion because when I took it apart there was no gaskets and the gasket kit came with a gasket for the reeds soThank you
now my plan was to relapse the valves clean them up put new rings Why new rings, if it wasn't smoking I would measure what you have before spending out on new) on it and valve guides (again why new guides - measure what you have) and valve guide seals Yes anyway only real questions I got is how the Reeds go in which way do they open down or up because I believe something's wrong there too also (unless you are really attached to an ineffective emission system there are several articles here on how to "delete" the reed valve set-up completely) I have to take it all the way down to nothing because when I disassembled it there were two washers missing from the head bolts and I think that's where the leak was coming from I know I didn't drop them in the engine but I have to check so I have to take all the way down to the crank I see if my magnets can pick up anything any suggestions how I can find out if I dropped anything down there Anything you dropped can only go down the chain tunnel, you can fish with a magnet on top of the crank and drop the oil pan off to find anything that made it past the crank

The 'delete' was mentioned in your other post 'which way up' as was which way up it should be.
Like others have said, measure the wobble in the vlave guides, probably fine. Deffo change the seals, , use Viton ones. Yeah, lap the valves after a good clean, make sure you keep the valves in the same place they came from. Do a valve clearance check/reset while the head's off, set the clearances to max tolerance. Follow the book for putting it back together.

That was my plan to check everything clearances making sure they're within tolerance as far as deleting which way is up I don't know why they did that I'm just asking a question because that reads only go one way which the proper way for the air to circulate coming down from the top down into the cylinder or from the cylinder up back through the vent pipes to the air breather that's the only question I was asking
