Oil leak only on sidestand

Hi all,

On my kz1000j 1981 I have an oil leak coming from behind the front sprocket cover, behind the sprocket itself.

When on centre stand it doesn't leak, when on sidestand it leaks. Is this due to the output shaft seal ? The gasket behind the sprocket cover has been replaced 3 times already do I'm guessing it's the seal but I want some confirmation if possible because that seal had been replaced as well.

Thanks!

Hi Lacher,
Is there any chance you're dealing with lubricant flinging off the front sprocket?

Had a similar issue recently. Turns out it I had damaged the transmission cover gasket on assembly. New gasket, no drips.

Hi Bill and Vinsky,

It's not chain lubricant, it only leaks on sidestand strangely.

I did change the transmission cover 3 times, all the times with the same gasket and some more silicone sealant. It doesn't drip more or less than before so seemed like it's something else, but I can't think of any other problem. I think I will go order a new genuine transmission cover gasket and see if it works..

Did it leak before all the multiple pulling of the trans cover? Does it dribble after a ride, engine heats up? Or just as mentioned all the time when on side stand? As Vinsky and Texas noted could be gasket or shift shaft seal, or both. One thing to note, have seen it multiple times. When installing the trans cover you can invert the single lip shaft seal by pushing it on during assembly. This makes the mess, pesky dribble you're explaining. When doing these engines i always use a Double-Lipped Shaft seal to replace the original Single. It's a 12X20X5 seal. I use Honda part# 91205-KF0-003. It's not metal OD like the original which makes it easier to install too.

I don't remember it leaking before I changed all the gaskets including that shift shaft seal.

But you are totally right ! I can see that the oil comes from above the trans cover, not through the gasket itself so it must be that shaft seal! It's almost impossible to see, but it does leak from above.

Great tip about that Honda seal I have a Honda shop nearby I'll order it next week and hope this works ! I'll give an update when I get at it
