Missing my KZ1000 J cams

03 Sep 2019 13:18

So I bought an 81 KZ1000 J basket case. And just realized the cams aren't there. I've spent 2 days searching for these things, but all I can find are the police type cams, with the two grooves.

I'm planning on keeping the bike mostly stock for now, but I dont want to take that performance hit. It looks like my only other option would be Web 118 cams. But I really dont want to spend $600.

Anyone have any recommendations, or cams they'd like to sell?

What performance hit, the cams are the same. The police bike use the 1000J engines so all parts are interchangeable.

I think there were at least three different cams used in the J engine.
The lowest lift and duration was for the LTD and CSR. The CSR exhaust cam has a tachometer drive gear that is missing on the LTD cam.
The highest lift and duration was for the GPz.
There was an in between grind for the J model (standard). I suspect this was used in the P as well, but have no confirmation.

Get some stock 3 bolt cams from the earlier motors and some APE adaptor sprockets for the HYVO chain and you will be up and running without much expense
There are tons of early cams about and they are all the same and work well in the J.
Also nearly all aftermarket cams are 3 bolt fitment so if you do decide to go for Web cams or the like in the future you will already have the adaptor sprockets.

So are the cams from the earlier engines as hot as the J's? I know the police model cams are a little tamer. I want this thing to rip!

The LTD and CSR use the same profile as the police model

If you want it to seriously rip, then you will need some serious aftermarket cams and to spend some serious money on porting, pistons, carbs, exhaust and such.
If you want it to run like Kawasaki designed it to, then the stock cams or the earlier Z/KZ cams are the best bet.

The KZ1000P uses the same engine components as the KZ1000J engine including cams there is no difference in the profile.

Yes!
The only other stock cams with higher lift in any other model are the 83-85 1100A Unitrack or 1100r (same engine in both).

And the GPz1100 B1 & 2s. Not as hot as the Unitracks. I'll measure mine tomorrow and dig into a manual for some more specs.

General rule is ALL KZ cams are the same. The only hotter ones are the GPZ models.
