Restarting a sitting Zed
04 Mar 2019 00:31 - 04 Mar 2019 02:02
Hi blokes, I'm sure it's been covered but can't find a thread. I haven't started my 77 z1000 for around 5 years. I'm assuming before I even kick her over I'll need to pull the plugs and oil the rings. Exactly how much oil am I putting down the plug holes?
Thanks fellas
Thanks fellas

Id give a squirt of WD40 (or similar) into each one and then about a teaspoon of engine oil, let it sit for a bit to let the oil drip down then give it a turn. Id have the bike on the center stand not the side stand. Turn it over with the kick start or a socket on the end of the crank.
But thats just me.

5 years isn't that long unless the bike was stored exposed to the environment. You shouldn't have to do anything to the cylinders. If there is rust there is rust, lubricant won't remove that. Maybe turn the engine over with a wrench or the kick start just to be sure it's not stuck before hitting the starter button. If it turns focus your energy on going though the carbs and cleaning out the tank.

If you put oil in the cylinders be sure to kick the engine over several times with the spark plugs out - not in - to avoid hydro lock. Ed

Thank mate, she's been stored undercover the whole time. With regards to the carbs, what do you recommend?

Start with your fuel tank, petcock, fuel filter condition inside should be rust free first .

What they said unless you stored it with gas in the tank and carbs then not such an easy job.
