Clearancing Tappet Bores
09 Oct 2018 05:44
Hey guys just getting ready to clearance my tappet bores for a .410 on a j head. Couldn't find any threads on it and it seems pretty straight forward, but I figured it couldn't hurt to get any advice out there before I start.
Any particular do's and don'ts?
Things to watch out for?
Super easy way to do it?
Anything you guys got is appreciated!

Be sure to keep all grinding swarf out of the oil passages in the head. There are blind passages feeding oil between cam bearings and the buckets that are very hard to clean out if you get debris inside.
And BTW, I recently bought this set of carbide cutters from Amazon for $15 shipped and they are fantastic. Cheap Chinese stuff that's actually good... www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0097QA7OW/ref...09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Only remove the needed metal from the thrust sides of the cams in the head. Remove only what is needed to clear the cams. Also check if you need to remove the "X" 's that are cast into the valve cover too!!!!
Just take you time, and you should not have any problems!!! Just make sure you get all the chips out of the head!!!!
This is what I had to do to my head to clear .440 lift cams.

Thanks for the tips guys. basically just as little as you can remove to clear them. Is there a specific clearance I should be going for from the end of the lobe to the head? Looks good Gamma, what'd you use to get such clean cuts?
