Hi!, My name is Dave! I am a Kawasaki Addict! (As everyone joins in, in unison).. Hi Dave! LOL
I am addicted to the sheer acceleration that my bike has. Even on it's worst day, it pulls like a freight train. I swear I must look like a chinaman when I get this bike wound up.
Anyway, my engine paint has seen better days, and it is about time to paint the cases again. Too many pressure washings, and oil spills / leaks take their toll. I have a harbor freight 6" (1/2 hp ?) bench polisher, and a bunch of drill type polishing wheels, but nothing matches chrome plating.

Efforts well-rewarded...
Bought the covers to have chromed off ebay, so I could ride in the mean time. Saved the old ones away for some reason that hasn't materialized yet. Even have several NOS covers still wrapped in white foam padding.
Crazy eh? Yep, that's me. :)

Crazy, NOT crazy. Smart IMO! I also have some parts ratholed too daveo. Not much, but some extras. Extra brakes and a bunch of misc from a lot of 83 shaftie parts I bought years ago. I wanted the tanks and side covers for spares, but they did not fit my old kaw, so I sold them. The NOS engine side covers on fleabay are wayyyy overpriced IMHO.

There is a tool close to me advertising a bunch of odd ball Kz1000 parts, for outrageous prices, with no phone number on CL. He advertised a Kz1000J Stator cover as a clutch cover a while back, so his credibility is out the window at this IP address. He claims to be an ex-drag racer, but in looking at his postings for sale, he seems to have forgotten what it is he is trying to sell.

Well, after getting sick of waiting for warmer weather, and with the addition of a small 250 watt electric heater into my little shed / workshop it was sunny and the temps topped at 32*F here in the lou soooo.. I got a couple of small projects done today. One being new tensioners / idler pulleys and new serpentine belt on my truck..

AND most importantly, reworked the Delkovic center-stand stop to move it away from the rear tire a tad bit. It was wayyy too close for my tastes as can be seen in the pic.


The stop looked slightly angled up around 10 *, and stuck out too far from the silencer. I put a framing square on it and scored the metal to a straight up 90* angle to the silencer bracket, then cut it off from the backing piece as carefully as I could, considering the metal cutting and grinding tools that I have available here. I used a pneumatic 3" cutoff tool that can do some major damage to some steel.


I changed the wire in my Lincoln mig welder to .023" ER308 stainless welding wire. (what a PITA that is lol)


It is / was pretty tricky getting a clean weld into that tight corner area because I was having trouble getting good penetration into both pieces of stainless with that big ole gas nozzle preventing me from getting in tighter, and ended up doing a "blob job" to get both pieces stuck down good. :-) A tig welder would have worked better on it. I'm glad it's under the bike rather than right out in sight on display.


As you can see, it did turn out good enough. I wish I had moved it further to the right, but this isn't too bad.

One thing to note on this exhaust, since the only mount is on the silencer, and the muffler support bushings are rubber bushing, the mount can twist in the rubber. Also with the slip together pipe joints and springs it can twist and change the position of the center-stand stop and silencer.. Which could put the stop into the tire sidewall. It is definitely something to keep my eye on. I noticed yesterday that the header collector is ~1" down from the oil pan after riding it a bit, where as this is where it originally was positioned.

Terrific bike. It's a killer. Stock geared 0-60 and it just about owns. Muscle cars, sports cars, sportbikes, this 37 year old bike does not discriminate. Well pal, if you gotta ask :laugh: I read through your thread and it doesn't appear any rejetting was done. I'm at high altitude with the kerker/ stock airbox/filter and 1up pilot, 2up mj and my bike will top out all of the max 85mph speedo quick. 0-60 will compress your cheeks like your blowing saw dust off yourself with the air hose . I understand delk says rejetting not required and know the same has been said about kerker but even at high alt my bike keeps pulling. Just throwing this out there. The rejet made it run cooler. Btw, I was just looking up a tach seal replacement, stumbled upon this delk exhaust while skimming the parts catalog, thought to check out kzrider and found your thread. So in way you've made it all come round full circle. Thanks, have a great day.

Sounds bueno. And the fact that it does not interfere with the filter super super nice. Don't know about you guys but around here in the rockies these bikes/non oem exhaust w/baffle will stop other motorist in their tracks. Many times someone in front me even a guy on highly modified sports bike with the sawed off go-to-jail loud pipe stop to listen to my bike go by this is while the traffic light is green. Take the baffle out, and it's game over. Oh, in my previous reply is not to put the bikes hp up on a stage. Just to suggest that in stock configuration kawasaki just about nailed.. The compress cheeks comment may have a little with the angle of the windscreen added on. Just a little. Other then that it's just about a perfect setup for what it is designed to do. And just to clear up any doubt when I was at the gas station and whereever else I ride, I have never ridden around with a forsale sign nor have i ever actually ever had a sign on one. But when someone comes up to you and says that, about the only other comment that ranks close to me is when someone says "man I used to own a bike just like that" and they have that momentary flash back in their eyes you feel like their existence hinges on your next breath.

I dont dare take the baffle out. hahaha. Im sure it would be way too loud, and I would then have to rejet the carbs.

I'd have to agree on the jetting. No spitting or sputtering, ever. It pulls HARD all of the time. It absolutely lays waste to everything on the highway. I kept the stock gearing when I changed the chain and sprockets last year(15/39) and as Steve Wood would say.. it is a little "zingy", but it's ok. I also agree that fattening it up a tad would cool it off a little, but "lean is mean" .. until you burn something up. :-) I couldn't resist starting it yesterday, just to hear that mean growl, and was very tempted to put on a coat and give it a quick blast. :woohoo:

Not splitting hairs here, but it's 38 years old, and still a monster. lol
