KZ650 Timing chain adjustment????? HELP:(

I just got my 1977 KZ650B1 started after installing new carbs. Bike seem to run fine But I noticed a little rattle noise from engine. I think it was timing chain. I understood that this timing chain adjustment worked like on a 80s honda 750. Loosen the bolt turn engine over slow maybe a revolution then just tighten bolt and your done. Well After loosening the bolt on the adjuster turning engine over with my foot and retightening the bolt the noise is MUCH worse I can hear a whirling noise even like chain is hitting or rubbing.  WHAT DID I do to cause this. Should I remove the adjuster and reset it or something?

Try turning it with a wrench per the FSM and see if it helps.

Looks like I messed up for sure. It seems the chain is much looser now. Definitly hear it rubbing on something. Would seem that it should be tighter. I was not aware of taking off the points cover procedure. Could it be too tight and cause the noise? Not sure if it will correct the problem now but will try it.

Sorry if I sound like an A-hole, but you really thought a 1977 Kawasaki worked the same as a 1980's Honda?  Why didn't you simply look in the Kawasaki Service Manual to see how to do things correctly instead of guessing?  If you can't afford the buy the manual then do yourself a huge favor and use the free one posted on this site (see link below).  Ed

By kicking it over you run the chance of skipping a tooth. Turn it over by hand and if you feel it stop, don't go any further.

I need to start over. Since I loosened the bolt already it it not true that the spring must be extended all the way and it needs to be taken off and pushed in and bold tightened so I can do the procedure by the manual?

Sounds like a good idea to take the tentioner out and push it back then loosening it again for adjustment. Get it set on one of the timing marks before removing it....... the 77 and 78 manual shows a diff spot to set it on before adj so even between these 2 models its a little different. Probably didn't skip a tooth like Steve said but would be a good idea to check the timing marks too just in case...... Now that you have a manual would be a good time to check the valve clearance too while you have the valve cover off. (You da man Ed).

I would get a gasket or two beforehand. Usually on EB, you can get a lot of 2 or 3 gaskets to lower the per unit price. spare points cover gaskets would be handy. I'm pretty sure all KZ650s & 750-4 models use the same gasket (aka pulsing coil gasket).

Also, there are 2 different tensioners shown in the diagram for the 1977 KZ650-B1, so verify which one you have.
EB photos can be handy for stuff like this, especially if you can find NOS part pics.

Thanks guys. I done this before I saw your post. I went to my 77 factory manual and turned the engine as it stated. then I loosened the bolt again it sounded like it readjusted when I loosened it. I retightened it and started the bike. It FIXED the noise!!! So it appears maybe it was just too tight because of the engine not being set in right place. Really APPRECIATE your guys help and advice.
