Hi everyone I have been having trouble finding a starter clutch rebuild kit for my kz 400 ltd but I have found the individual parts on line, what my question is will I need to renew the pins and rollers or is it just the springs that need to be replaced or best to renew everything, and do any one know the part number for the gasket can't find it on any part diagrams thanks in advance

In your signature line please show your bike's exact year and model (see image below). That will make it possible for folks to look up parts diagrams and provide better support to you. Ed

Take a look at the link below for the starter clutch diagram. One thing you should check is the outer surface of the large round assembly piece in the group marked #3. It can develop depressions where the roller contacts it, and those depressions can make the starter clutch slip and make bad noises.

Regarding the gasket - I'm not sure which one you need, but if it isn't on the diagram for the starter clutch assembly look at the second link below and click on " Select Assembly " near the upper right hand side of that window and you should be able to find the diagram and part number for the gasket. Gaskets are in the fishe. Check the engine cover page.

I'd replace springs, rollers, all the small parts. They are cheap enough and it's a pain in the butt to crack open the engine so no reason to skimp. You will need a rotor puller to gain access to the starter clutch. Don't forget to order one of those too.

Exactly which gasket are you trying to find? My 1977 KZ650 has more than 60,000 miles on it, and I have replaced several gaskets but only once in those 40 years/60K+ miles. I used genuine Kawasaki gaskets. I wouldn't buy a whole set of gaskets; especially aftermarket ones. Ed

I would plan to replace all the wearable parts. A started clutch kit comes with replacement springs, spring caps and the rollers. It can be a pain to get in there to replace the parts so I wouldn't try to save a couple bucks and risk having to go back into replace a $2 spring in 6mo. I'm not sure about the individual parts but the kit I found cost $30-$40 I think.
