Exhaust Pipe Rechrome
17 Dec 2011 14:46
I think I have finally decided to rechrome the pipes for my '77 KZ1000 LTD only because the alternative is modification to new pipes to get them to fit. Will I need to remove the baffles first? If so, has anyone removed tack welded in baffles? I figured I could probably cut them out with my dremel tool and then grind the welds smooth. To put them back in I'd drill and tap and put them in with a couple screws. any thoughts on this?

+1 on what Martin said...the deposits in the pipes contaminate the chroming baths...but you might get lucky.

I would think you could take the pipe and have the inside blasted to remove any carbon deposits or rust first.

Years ago we used to take the pipe off, block the downpipe end and stand it up then fill with a strong solution of caustic soda.It dissolves the carbon and muck.Leave overnight.Any reason you can't do that?It would keep the plating man happy.
