To start 2026 we are heading to Germany for Joe's beautiful 1000, one of a pair in Joe's stable it's another example of Joe's great work, over to JoeHere's the story and restoration of my A1: Bought in October 2024, it had been slumbering silently in a barn for 17 years, everything was filthy with dust and gasoline residue, the usual stuff. All the brakes were seized and corroded, all the brake lines were porous, the engine was heavily oxidized, the tires, chain, and other moving parts were old and broken... with a lot of time, parts, careful polishing, and attention to detail, as well as a new paint job and a reupholstered seat, it was back on the road in March 2025.naturally it was more work than simply polishing the outside parts,...I removed and cleaned the oil pan, cleaned the oil pump strainer, adjusted valve lash, lubricated all inner engine parts like tappets, shims, cam bearings, timing chain, cylinders and pistons through the spark-plug holes, and turned it slowly, as all was lubricated by engine oil, flushed engine with new oil,....cleaned and restored all brakes and parts of them, dito try to clean the carbs, but that was hopeless. Carbs were so heavy oxidized, with totally corroded inner parts, was no rescue possible without damaging the rusted inner parts, so, I´ve rebuild another rack of VM26 carbs I`ve bought here used...the rest" was muscle work by carefully clean and polishing engine housing and metal parts, only the rear fender was replaced, I´ve bought a new one. I left the "OZ"-wheel in place, i like them immensely! Put some new Bridgestone BT46 on it, and left a little patina as it is.The paint job in nearly original colour was done by a friend of mine and is in perfect condition, I was happy when I got the parts back. Bike have now this season about 3000 Km´s new on the clocks, engine runs great and powerful, compression on all 4´s is about 10 to 10,5 Bar (140 psi in "old money")

Hi Scotty,
Thank you very much!
(But I'm well aware that most of the other BOTMs were restored or built much more extensively and to a much higher standard!)
I was dealing with a medium amount of work and expense here: Overhauling the forks and brakes, drivetrain, tires, inner + outer engine-cleaning ,new paint and of course some new parts like intake rubbers on head, and between carbs and air cleaner, rear fender and a full hand of all the "little" hardware, we`re almost need on a restoring
I didn't want to achieve an "over-restoration" or a "new condition" (also for cost reasons, of course), but rather to preserve a certain light "used patina" on this bike, which simply seems "honest" and authentic to me.
My philosophy on this, explained very simply:
If the hex head of a screw is still perfectly fine, and the screw isn't damaged or rusted, I see no point in re-galvanizing or replacing that screw on my bikes just because the old zinc surface is a bit darker than if it were newly galvanized...
Thank you very much!

I get it, Joe. My Z1 is also revived, not restored. I like to say, it got patina the old fashioned way: left outside too often.
