Figured out part of the running rich problem. Took the carbs back off to readjust the float levels. The stock pilot jets for RS36's is supposed to be 17.5 the PO had 22.5s. The cool thing abut Mikuni is the Jets from my VMs are the same and I had a set laying around. Mains are 120 stock but has 122.5s, I will leave those for the time being. Needle jet stock position is -3 he had them set for -5 all the way down at the bottom.
As soon as I get done with the DMV I can get a quick tune in, some plates on and go for a ride. Since it is only 48° outside I'm in no hurry.

Good for you. It will get warmer this week. Still colder than a Siberian witches titty in the high desert.

It sounds like youer making things too complicated for yourself with the brake problem (challenge). Could you not just get the master cylinder that originally went with the calipers (Gsxr?) and take it from there.? Same with the clutch.
This stuff about the weight of the bike and the size of the discs etc sounds a bit excessive. Maybe its important for a high spec race bike but
the matching caliper/master seems like the place to start. A base line. Chances are itll be the best combo youll get.You can always fiddle with it later.
Best thing to do is try this combination, aim for a solid brick wall,go as fast as you can, then hit the anchors. If they dont work then you can be assured that the wall will stop you!! (Remember. Safety first!!!)

That would have been easier, unfortunately the OEM master for the front end I bought had a fixed reservoir and would suck air had I uses it on my bar set-up. I have found one that will work for the brakes. I am still searching for one for the clutch but am not in a hurry for it as I had the option to go back to cable.

Test ride today went pretty well. I still have somethings to address. The carbs ran much better today. Unfortunately I ordered the wrong tachometer lead for the Trail Tech gauge so I didn't have a tach. Idle to 1/2 throttle was pretty good. I may play with the jet needle position again. I am pretty sure that the main jet needs to drop down to from 122.5 to 120 which would be stock.
I found my oil leak and thought that I had it fixed but it is still leaking a bit at the base of the lower oil cooler adapter. I replaced the o-rings but there wasn't a gasket. Is there supposed to be?

Did the surface have paint on it? My old ones had gaskets.

I've never seen gaskets on those myself, only o-rings. The adapter housings can crack easily if the barbed fitting is overtightened...maybe there is a crack instead of a leak at the bottom? (ask me how I know how easily they crack  )

No paint, I masked them off when I painted the block.

79 might be right about leaking at the fitting. Maybe sealer all around.

I will have to look at them again. I did not see any oil coming from the fitting. The o=rings are brand new.

04 Dec 2015 03:07Thanks Davido, that means I have been slacking on my reading as I have a digital subscription to Practical Sportsbike. Thank you for the article. Matching the M.C. to the front brakes made a world of difference.
