feeler gauges to check the rod side clearance.no up and down play of the rod on the crank.
a 17mm rod through the lil ends to make sure it is still in phase.
these lower ends are pretty straight forward, you'll dig it once you get in there  .

CRISIS AVERTED! Man, sometimes I wonder how I have even got this far in the build. It is pretty embarrassing to even admit this. I started tearing the engine back down to find the problem, once I pulled the cylinders off it was pretty obvious. originally I was using just hose clamps to compress the piston rings. Apparently, at one point in time one of them had fallen in the #2 cylinder and I did not see it. No damage done, other than to my pride. Was a wake up call for me that I need to slow down and triple check everything. Ordered a new gasket, will get everything cleaned back up and put back together without the "extra parts" this time.

The way I look at it is it could have been something smaller that didn't get it the way right away but did on start up. I was lucky. So from now on its triple checks and more patience.

It probibly wouldn't have caused real damage but all hell would have been breaking loose.
Back in the late 70's I had just put in the cams and was ready to put on the cover when this guy I always tried to ignore came up and started talking to me, For some reason I pushed the starter button, relized I hadn't installed the idler and bent all my valves. Just that quick. Now when I'm working on my bike and someone wants to talk, I stop what I'm doing, give him that look and he goes away. I'm not kind.
This aint no party. No beer, I'm working.

Re: Phoenix Fighter

Didn't get a lot done on the bike today, stuck waiting on some fresh Wisco circle clips for the piston pins. So I spent time staring at the bike. This is helpful sometimes as I come up with new ideas or solutions I did not see before. I was going to purchase new gauges from Speed Hut because I couldn't find a way to mount the speed sensor to my Trail Tech unit. Well problem solved. I also had to pull my fork tubes to have them serviced. I hate farming out work but this is something I really didn't want to mess with and have to buy yet another specialty tool I will loan out more than I use. So here are a few pics of the magnet I mounted.

Re: Phoenix Fighter
24 Jul 2015 18:39I don't know yet, still have not started the bike yet. Engine is back together, dropping cams in this weekend. I was thinking od buying new Web cams equivalent to Andrews 2X instead of running my used 1X cams. I have decided to run what I have and if I don't like it I can drop in new Web cams. Should have it running by end of August. Gething married August 1st and it has been eating into my bike time.531blackbanshee wrote: just realized you are using a www.c5ignitions.com/motorcycle-ignitions.html .
