Ok guys check is out... This is my next project and would like some feedback on my plans..

Tank obviously needs some attention, so here is what I am thinking.

1. Clean inside of tank
2. Mild acid bath in side and out.
3. MIG weld in some material and grind back flat for extra support in the areas I think need it.
4. Solder in the holes with 40/60
5. Clean inside again
6. Red Kote inside of tank

I welcome any suggestions, and or criticisms to my process.

Thanks in advance,

Jack

Maybe brazing would stick better than soldering, followed by carefull sanding/grinding. It might be time for a new tank.

Mine had a small hole in the bottom.had a friend tig weld it because mig gets to hot and will blow a bigger hole. afterwards did all the body work. then had tank coated with the red stuff.then primed and painted. never had a problem. bike has been done about a year.my rear sets are mounted in the same spot on my bike. position is just about perfect for me. im 6 5".as far as material for mounts I used .5 inch solid round bar drilled and tapped for 5/16 bolt.very strong.oh yea dont forget to set up the shifter side with the kick stand in the up postion

I would use the TIG rather then the MIG/MAG as Camaroguy said, but if you just have a MAG availeble i would "tack" it up, the grind it down...only downside would be that it could create some areas of unwanted wled through on the inside..

Epoxy type fuel tank liners are available from several sources.
The viscous mixture is distributed evenly over the interior surface by slowly turning the tank.
Masking tape may be used on the outside to cover the holes and prevent excessive loss of product through the holes.
The freshly sealed tank is allowed to harden, and may then be sanded and painted as usual.

Good Fortune! :)

Here is a quick update.. Spend some time on the tank this weekend, and she is water tight. I still have to seal it, but happy with the results thus far.

I spent a little time and added some material with the MIG welder by just tack it on and working it in. I forgot to take a pic of it when I was done with just the welding, so you will just have to imagine.. lol

I then brazed it, grinded it, brazed it grinded it... took me three passes to get it where I wanted it, and it was all sealed up. But worth the effort I do believe..

Here is a pic after the first pass.. Left side done.

Second Pass.. getting a little closer.

Final pass.. .

Next it will get sealed and chemical tested for a good week or more...

Boost..
