Hi all,

This is my 81 750. So far only minor fixes have been done, fixed the stripped thread for the cam-chain tensioner, drilled a broken bolt out for the clutch cover. Removed several electrical "enhancements" and checked valve clearance and compression. It runs very well. Now this winter I plan to do some cosmetic stuff. I do not like the seat, the headlight is rusty and partly broken, and so on. I also am thinking of a repaint. I do not want to do a back-to-original restoration, I mainly want it to become a useful and good-looking bike. All advice and comments are very welcome.

Go with a more rounded tank (watch ebay and make something fit.) A better looking seat or just cut the stocker to look like you want. And do something with the mirrors.

Yeah, the tank is big, concerning the mirrors I am thinking on the café-like ones placed on the handlebar ends.

Nice looking bike...I am partial to that style tank (I have a 1982 KZ750R1)...the tank is probably from that bike, or a 1983 KZ750L3 or 1984 KZ700A1, but it isn't stock. If you go with barend mirrors, the cafe style tank (like you have) would complement the look.

That's a gorgeous bike! I'd put some lower bars on it, and some lower profile mirrors (I'm using Ken Sean bar end mirrors that were cheap, and they work great), and have your seat ELR "cloned" by a reputable upholsterer and that'd lean out your body lines real nice...then you could give it to me!

Seriously, that is a nice lookin' bike.

Hehe, and thanks, I have an upholstery guy close by who I will ask to fix the seat. I also have to clean up the electrical system a little more. Mirrors and bar to be ordered. Also thinking of repainting the bike, maybe red? with white stripes. The paint looks better in the picture than it really is.

I was gonna say "don't do that", but ewwwweeeeee, that looks good!

Also, for a cheap fix until you settle on "paint"; you can get some vinyl stripes and make an '84 version by putting yellow, orange, and red stripes along the bottom of the tank and tail. I always liked that paint theme. And that wouldn't cost you but a little bit and some attention to detail when you put it on.

hmmm ... I think I like the squared off tank !!! The candy red photoshop looks too cool !!!

Short progress report: I started with the forks today, they felt a little squishy. The fork seals seemed ok but when the dustcover was removed I saw that a new "seal" made of teflon tape where in place...Probably very little oil in the forks also. To my surprise there was airpressure still there.

So now I am to refurbish the forks. Anything special more to check apart from the seals?
