PJ1 Fast Black frame paint
17 Apr 2026 11:44
Looking to get some frame paint for a 1981 KZ650-CSR. guessing the 750H-Ltd used the same color since the frames are the same.
PJ1 fast black comes in Satin black and Gloss black. not sure which to get. z1enterprises says Satin is a good match for the factory frame on many Japanese motorcycles. leaning towards gloss. Thanks.

Gloss black paint will highlight every single imperfection; satin is a lot more forgiving

I have all my frames powder coated gloss black.
I have to say though that the PJ1 paint is garbage since they changed the formula 15 years or more ago .
I now use Sperex/Simoniz Tough Black which is as good as the PJ1 used to be.
I use the satin on my engines and it is heat and fuel proof once baked on..

Just an fyi. not going to paint the whole frame. there's minor rust here n there. so just want to do some touch-up. not going to do a frame off or anything.

That must be a UK only paint Zed. Looked on ebay and only supply would be out of the UK, no USA supply.

I was looking for Sperex and found this:
"Heat Resistant Paint
The racing car shown is one of many coated with an inorganic paint that protects "hot parts" of automotive vehicles. Developed and manufactured by Sperex Corporation, Gardena, California, the durable, heat-resistant paint is used on car and truck exhaust systems, firewalls, brake drums and engine manifolds. NASA technology contributed to development of the paint. Sperex was provided a technical support packa'ge detailing the research of Goddard Space Flight Center on long-life inorganic coatings. The information helped Sperex perfect its own formulations."
ntrs.nasa.gov/citations/20070018917 (This is from 1978, which is probably why it mentions "brake drums".)
Also from Google:
We do have VHT here in the US, so I guess that would be our local equivalent.
