Looking for ideas for a new paint job on my project but I'd like to base it (loosely) on an original design. Are there any archives or resources that give a history of the colours and designs through the different year/model runs? (colour codes would good too)

Click on model/ year for colour names. 

Kawasaki didn't use paint codes but the Lechler paints website has a list of thousands of bikes of all makes from the early 70's onwards with their current colour code as a cross reference. It's not ideal because many kawasaki bikes from the 70's are actually candy colours over a base colour which creates the final different third colour.

Awesome chart, every bike is in their but mine. I have yet to see another LTD with the same paint and graphics. I'm pretty sure it was only one year for the paint scheme.

As nice as it is I wouldn't think that is an original Kawasaki design paint scheme. Kawasaki preffered more rectangular blocks of colour or pin stripes for their design schemes. Even the Z1000a2 was a little out of character for them. I would say yours is a personal repaint design which is why it's not shown and that you haven't seen another like it. 

It's the original paint, the bike has been in the family since it was new.

Well it is a rare scheme then, I've not seen anything like it in the uk. Is it a Japan or Nebraska build?

I noticed that the K and M models are not on that list. Don’t see the ZN either.

Thanks, I found one in the gallery with the same paint scheme. It was posted in 2011 by KZBOB77

 

I think especially with Ltd's there are several variations that are not so common like the below
