I just got a reproduction Z1 gas tank for my bike and was wondering if I should remove the primer they applied at the factory. The tank is made in Taiwan and I'm not sure if it's a decent quality primer. It looks like epoxy, but I could be wrong.

At Least Primer is better than bare metal with an oil coating like the cheap Harley chi-comm crap guys bring me to paint!
Just wet sand it down with 400-600 to start, it will show you the low & high spots. I always put some simple green in my water when I wet sand in beginning.
I seal first with some epoxy primer thinned 10% xtra. Then I use my high build urethane grade primer for wet sanding before color coat.

I would strip off the shipping primer and start fresh. For my last project I used Transtar Epoxy primer and it worked nicely.
