I know this has been covered before and I have used the search (and yes I will go back and RE-read threads, too).

I decided to post here, even though I no longer have the KZ, because it seems rattle can painting is common with a group of people that own older bikes. :)

Anyway, I want to paint my 2000 SV650. It has rash on the tail from a lowside, so I want to repaint over it. (It will hurt some to lose that badge of honor though...)

I want the plastics to be a flat or matte black. First off, what is the difference between flat and matte paints? What would you suggest I spray for this? Should I just go with a black primer (suggestions on brand)?

I never painted anything, nor have I ever used spray paints, so please be easy... ;)

The tank would be the last thing I want to do (if I do it), and it will be an orange or yellow...I think. If you'd like to input an early suggestion on that, feel free. :)

Thanks!!!

Edit: ohhh looks like all the board settings have been reset since I was last here...

Flat black is tricky... You'll see fingerprints and the likes anytime anything or anyone (including you, gas, motoroil and W40) touches the bike. I really like the Rustoleom ToughGuard Semi Flat which gives you a low, hot-rod like sheen and looks WAY better than all flat black. I used their grey primer, which is fine.

Sorry, that would be KRYLON ToughGuard semi flat, not rustoleum.

Yeah I agree, a lot of people say "flat black" but it's rare that flat black is really what you use. Unless you're realy keepign it on the cheap. ;)

Matte Black and Satin black is what you want to use. It bacially low-luster, but still has a slight sheen to it and resists scuffs and prints etc, as was mentioned.

You can always use a flat black though if you are goign to coat it after with a matte clear. The clear will help protect it againt crap as well.

Flat will be a headache. Matte or semi= gloss black will be more forgiving.

If I use a black primer, can I go straight to a matte clear on top of that? Or should I put some satin/matte paint on top of the primer first?

Dutchz, did you put any clear over your semi-flat paint?

btchalice, that paint looks like it could be a good candidate for when I do my exhaust. The exhaust is aluminum. Would I need to sand it down before, or just clean and spray?

don't know if anybody else has had this problem, but, i had to buy some duplicolor adhesion promoter for the plastics because the paint just wanted to bead up in some spots even after sanding and scuffing, the stuff worked though

On aluminum, always spend the money for ACID etching primer. Paint wont just Stick magically to aluminum for some reason.
