I did the exact swap you are talking about doing on my 81 KZ 650 CSR. I robbed the wheels off one of the 81 550 LTD's I have. Was a piece of cake nothing to modify at all. The 70's stuff will not work different axle sizes. here is a pic of my bike after the swap.

The rear brake panels are the same as are the rear shoes. You are correct the only difference is the fact the 550's are painted. When I changed mine over I thought about using the black panel but being lazy I decided to just polish up the 650 panel. Smoking deal on those wheels and tires. If I'd have seen that they would be getting shipped to Akron.

Thanks again. It's handy to have the doubt removed about sumthin'. I was gonna bid on the wheels if they were still available - whether or not they'd be useable. That's about the nicest wheel/tire combo I've seen - particularly for the price.

Next question: does your bike still have the mini-apehangers? I got rid of mine a while back - what an improvement.

Yep I still have the "mini apehangers" on it. Reason being is #1 the bike is basically an unmolested survivor that starts instantly, idles good, runs great(since I fixed a minor electrical problem yesterday) and doesn't look too bad. #2 since I use it as a daily driver and my work is only 2.5 miles from home how uncomfortable can they be? #3 I have a number of different bikes in varying states of repair/disrepair that I can choose from so depending on my mood or needs, I just pick one to ride. I currently have 3 KZ650's, a 77 650C1 with stock bars for a more upright ride, the CSR with the mini apes and a 79 650 B with drag bars. I think you can see why I have no real need to mess with this bike too much. I am thinking about selling the sissy bar, there is a guy on another site looking for one. This one is in nice shape and it is an original Kawasaki accessory catalog item. I figure it has to be worth at least a Benjamin to somebody who wants a sissybar, personally I could care less if it is there or not.
