On my kz900 the steering feels weird, its like it has 3 positions, forward left & right. Its not smoothe like all my other bikes have been, I dont feel any grinding when i turn it which is good. It feels like it has a steering lock on but I have never applied it.

second thought now I will go inspect that.

But anyways, how much are bearings for the kz900 ? 1976

Check partsfishpro for pricing, but it sounds like the bearings/races are bad. Had bike that felt like it had a notch when dead center and was hard to turn. Then you had enough force in it that when it overcame the bearing notches it would clunk all the way to post left or right. replaced the bearing and races in steering tube and problem was solved. Also, if it gives you bearings that are individual...talk to local shop and they should be able to provide captured ball bearings for you (will save you a major headache).

Your steering head bearings are bad.
