Hi Folks,
I have a great deal of difficulty replacing the fork caps on my KZ1000. After an oil change the springs push back hard enough to make re-threading the caps without cross-threading a tricky task.
I'm thinking of tapping the caps so as to fit a bolt on top, allowing quick removal for subsequent oil changes.I want to experiment with different oil weights and pre-load inserts as well.
Can anyone tell me if this is possible, and if there exists a tool to make re-installation easier, thereby eliminating the need to tap the caps.

Thanks for any of your thoughts!

Paddy

Paddy, if you jack the front end off the ground and the front end is hanging, then the springs should fit completely into the tubes and allow the tops to be screwed in relatively easily.:)

Hey Mcdroid, thanks for the quick reply. Actually tried that using my handy removable centre-stand but the damn springs still sit too high in the tube. Maybe the springs are too long! I suppose putting in slightly shorter springs would work but they might soften the rather stiff front end, maybe giving it a squishy feel.
Whaddya think?

Yeah, shorter springs will affect the handling...I don't know what to tell you...I've had no serious trouble getting the tops back on the front ends of my Z1000's:unsure: Can't say if your springs are too long.
