So, I bought this set of mini-case guards and the seller didn't bother to include the mounting hardware. Claimed that it was thrown into a listing with all the miscellaneous hardware. :angry: :angry: :angry: At least they cleaned up quite nicely and I only have about $16 in 'em (yes the ugly highway pegs have been removed).

These guards supposedly came off of a 650SR. But I noticed the following discrepancy. The lower mount apparently uses a U-bolt of some sort. The inside to inside measurement of the holes is 1 inch. However, measuring the frame tube, it appears to be 1.25 inch. So, there goes the stainless U-bolt option.

Does anyone know what kind of hardware these things used? Or, who made/makes them?

I have a set on my 78' SR, but the third support bar goes horizontally not vertically...Heres a link to an old post that shows the kind I have:

Its from when Steve got his new set, I ended up buying a set from the same guy off ebay.
My bottom mount is definitly different then yours, basically the same as top mount.

Heres one more link that has a pic of robs cases, nice shot, wish my engine was that clean :blush:

If nothing else I haven't installed my new set yet and I'm pretty sure it came with hardware so I could measure it for you, may help with the top mounts at least. If you want me to dig the hardware out let me know and I'll do it when I get home from work tonight.-Brian

I think JM is right. The mounts on the ends should line up with existing engine mount bolts.

I have the other kind also and there is a U bolt for the middle bar because there is no engine mount there.

Also, I had to get a longer bolt (threaded rod) for my upper mount.

I have to admit, I am just speculating based on how mine are set up.

The only way to do it is to try both sides. I don't have any experience with the 650s so I don't know how the engine mounts.

It's been a while since I had case guards, but the way they mounted did sometimes use U bolts. For sure on a KZ650 the top mount would go to your engine mount bolt on the front of the engine, then usually the bottoms would go to another engine mount bolt below the engine, but in your case you'd have to find U bolts. Your case guards are "two point" meaning only 2 points of mount. Most were made 3 point. 2 points usually will simply bend over and break in even a 2mph tipover. The existing engine mount bolts are too short to work with casesavers, so they would include longer bolts, usually crap bolts with a mixture of SAE and/or metric, some coarse, some fine thread. Seemed whatever was laying around they would include in a kit even if not near the right size or length. A good hardware store may have metric bolts a little longer than your existing ones. I don't think those guards are made for a KZ650, but may work.

the ones I put on had to have a longer bolt which goes thru the top engine mount, I bought stainless steel allthread and washers, nuts , etc, havent had any issues

Not by the way the pegs were mounted with their hinge, the triangular piece also had a bit of staining showing that it had been mounted to the frame tube. I've held them up both ways, and the end with the single hole does appear to mount to the front engine bolt.

I did look at the photos from the miscellaneous auction, but didn't see anything that looked right. And they did supposedly come off of a '79 650SR

Crap. Now that I cleaned them, maybe I could sell them and get my money back. :S :laugh:

I did some additional measuring with a set of calipers yesterday evening and it looks like the bars are designed to use a U-bolt made to fit 1.125" tubing with a 1/4" bolt size. I have a local auto parts shop looking into it for me. If fact they may be able to have it fabbed out of stainless or get it plated locally. I'll see what I wind up with.
