Typical components to replace when rebuilding forks?

I've always farmed out my suspension work but my suspension guy died. Ack!

I'm going to rebuild the forks in my 1983 KZ750L3. As far as I can remember they have just had fork oil changes a few times. They seem sacked out and loose. They will hold air but that's not much help.

 

While I haven't rebuilt the forks on my KZP, I have done them on my FJ1300 and TL1000R.   The job was not difficult.   The TL required a spring compressor tool, which I made.  The only things I replaced were springs, bushings ans seals.  I used OEM parts, especially for the seals.  I read too many compliants about leaky aftermarket seals.

As mentioned, typically springs (use progressives) and fork seals (use OEM, if possible). You can search for bushings but, unfortunately, for many older Kawasaki models, they are unavailable. Basically, any item that would deteriorate with time and exposure to oil (o-rings, etc.) should be replaced.

I called a Kawasaki employee and had him look up the bushings. While they are currently back ordered they are still produced. They are part number 44065-1016.

The forks don't leak oil; they just seem sacked out and loose.

bushings. fork seals. snap rings. dust boots. fork springs. fork cap o-rings. fork cover gskts. bottom allen bolt gskts.  elaborating. the snap rings can get brittle over time. maybe the fork cap o-rings >> a hf metric o-ring kit sould have something suitable >> mine were fine even after heating the fork caps to break them loose. the fork cover gskts if they're cracked.

After mulling it over I'm really thinking about just doing fresh oil and springs. Might do steering head bearings.
