Oil - Fork Cap Tool / Removal Procedure?
30 Apr 2026 12:07 - 01 May 2026 02:44Hey, I apologize in advance for the ignorant post, I’ve tried searching the site along with the shop manuals for a clear answer, but it’s just been driving me crazy….
I have mechanical experience but am new to my 83’ KZ440D Belt LTD
How do I add oil to the fork? When I was changing the tires, I let most of it out accidentally like a bone head. It looks like there’s the cap on top that perhaps needs a specialty tool to be able to unscrew? It doesn't have a hex nut. It also has an air valve.
All the best - Thank y’all so much

Someone here should know the amount and weight of oil needed
Procedure normally is drain tube completely ( Little screw at bottom )
Then add new oil thru the top bolt at the top triple tree
More details can be had with manual

the top fork cap seat spring is held in place by a circlip. press down on the cap then pry out the circlip. keep in mind that the cap is under spring pressure. so it and the circlip can go flying. also. everything is probably stuck from grunge. some liquid wrench might help. I would disassemble the forks and give them a good cleaning. remove the fork cap, dump out the old oil. pour in some lacquer thinner or mineral spirits. re-install the cap. invert a few times. then dump out that mess. proceed with the disassembly to give everything a good cleaning. old fork oil can be pretty gross.

I really appreciate that a lot - I’m gunna give it a shot ASAP
Should I remove the air valve that looks screwed in first - that’s a hex nut?
