Chain tension adjustment on '82 kz440
07 Oct 2025 11:20
Hey guys I have a 1982 KZ440 that has been converted to chain drive from belt drive by the previous owner. I'm curious as the new KZ owner how to adjust chain, and what regular chain tension should be. Thanks!

They made chain models too so I would go with what the Factory Service Manual says for those, which is probably 25-30mm slack. The manual may be on this website somewhere, if not it is here
www.kz400.com/Workshop%20manual%20bilder...Service%20Manual.pdf
It should give complete directions.

Also, I think I mentioned this before but make sure its not hitting the frame somewhere because that has been known to happen on some 440 chain conversions.

motorcycle on center stand. spin the rear wheel by hand while checking the midpoint of the chain to find the tightest spot. there should be about 1" (25mm-30mm) of slack in the chain. ie, 1" of up and down movement. I pull down on the chain, note that point on the ruler, then push up on the chain. 1" is at the midpoint of the spec for my motorcycle. on yours, you'd probably want 1" to 1-1/8". I use a folding carpenter's ruler taped to a wood block.

the 80-82 kz440 fsm (part # 99924-1011-03) from the kz400.com site says 25-30mm center stand measurement (440A/C models). 20-25mm side stand measurement (440B models).
