Is the 530 chain conversion a worthwhile improvement?

My 82 GPZ 750 has the original 630 setup with 13/33 gearing.
The original sprockets are on it and are pooched although the previous owner put a new 630 chain on it just before I bought it. ( cheap bastard left the sprockets alone though!)

So...
I figured I may consider the 530 conversion and buy a new chain anyway.

Is the 530 setup markedly freer running/revving?
I know a new 530 will be far stronger than the oem 630 is.

Also, I want to go to a larger front sprocket to get rid of the stupidly small 13.
The 83 and up Gpz use 15/38 stock.
Is this setup a bolton to my 82?
The 82 is a twin rear shock bike where the 83 and up are Unitrak.

I'm thinking 15/41 would be good?

Your 82 has the clutch cable on the left, correct? that means there is a clutch pusher rod going through the trans shaft and sticking out in front of the sprocket.
The 83 clutch cable is on the right side on the clutch cover and has no clutch pusher rod sticking out on the left side. So the 83 has room for a 15 tooth 630 sprocket, and I don't believe a 15 tooth 630 sprocket will fit on the 82, because that clutch pusher rod is in the way. IIRC, Ten6 tried to put a 15 tooth 630 sprocket on a KZ750E motor in a 83 GPz750 frame, and ran into that problem.

I concur with Steell on the sprocket size issue. The largest size front sprocket you can fit on a 750 with the clutch cable entering on the left side of the sprocket cover is 14 teeth (I have that on my KZ750H -- it JUST BARELY fits). Of course, this presumes that you will be sticking with a 630 chain size. If you go with the 530 size, then it will allow a larger number of teeth on the same outside diameter sprocket, I believe.

I'm also considering the 530 conversion for my 1980 KZ750H.

So just how big a front sprocket can we use if we switch to 530? What size rear sprocket should we use to keep the revs down on the highway? How many links of 530 do we need?

15T front, 38T rear gives 2.53:1 - very similar to stock
16T front, 41T rear gives 2.56:1 - just slighter lower gearing
15T front, 41T rear gives 2.73:1 - lower gearing - if you do 4500 rpm at 60 mph, them it raises the RPM to 4836 rpm at 60 mph


So what kind of ratio would a 16T front and a 38T rear give? Can I use a 16T front sprocket on my bike?

I'm NOT going to be drag racing my bike, I'm looking for better fuel economy and extended engine life... and maybe an enhanced top speed...

I tried a 16 tooth on my 900 and took it off pretty quickly. It did change the various sweet spots but in doing so only made the bike less streetable.

As far as improving mileage, I doubt that the payback is linear. By that I mean that in order to get down the road a given amount of work has to be done. Running at a higher or lower RPM has less effect on mileage than adding or subtracting weight.

What'd you have for a back sprocket? What do you mean by "less streetable"? Too slow off the line?

Hi GG,
I have the standard 35 tooth rear sproket. By less streetable I mean that it seemed that the shift points between first and second and second and third had moved right to where I had become used to laying the power on around town. As soon as I had the 16 tooth sproket on, I realized that Ma Kaw's engineers had already picked the best setup for all around street use so I went back to it.

It's what worked for me.

Light years ahead of all you guys. I recently had a buddy of mine's 01 r6 in the garage, and he'd done a 520 conversion. Yep, you guessed it, the 77 kz650 and 900/1000s countershaft is the same toothing and size as an '01 r6. Ebay search r6 and find the chain stuff. I had the guy on the phone send me a 120 link 520 chain, front sprocket from r6 (15 tooth)and rear sprocket that would fit a kawasaki bolt pattern (40 tooth) for @ $150 shipped. Now that saves weight over a 630!!!
