I recall someone saying that there is a difference in the rear end of the SR to allow for a fatter tire? Can I pull the rear wheel and put it on my kz if I also transfer the caliper and rotor? I think they are different too? Also, the SR I looked at today that I may buy has drilled rotors, was this stock? and WHAT is up with that seat????? Man that is the ugliest setup ever. er I mean, is there anyone who wants a great double wide double decker seat? Its really cool.....

Also the turn signals are bar mounted, anyone have any luck converting those to shock mount?

Thanks in advance, apologies if this topic has already been covered.

PS are there any other things about the SR that are different or better/worse that i should know about?

The SR has a 16" wheel where (depending on your model) others have an 18" wheel.

I found out last week that the brake disc is different between a C model (18" wheel) and an SR (16" wheel) I couldnt tell you if the caliper is any different though, I dont remember which one I put on, but it works

For the front signals to become shock (headlight actually) mounted there are ears that slip between the top and bottom of the triple tree. They wrap around the upper fork tubes.

you misread or understood my question regarding the trun signals. I realize that my other two bikes have the signals mounted on 'posts' from te headlight bucket, i just wondered if anyone had managed to mount the signals from the SR instead to the Shocks instead of the bars, I realize also that the bracket is sufficiently lacking in diameter, I have straight small bars and no room for those signals, but i also dont like the big ones on my other bikes, just wanted a compromise...

I put smaller bars on mine(78SR)and there is no room for signals either, This is my thought, I'm going to put longer bolts from the inside of the headlight bucket going out and install the signals on the end of the bolts so they set right next to the headlight, I don't want them to stick out like a KZ but close in as possible to the headlight, if you can picture it

I don't know how the turn signals are supposed to be mounted but on my nephew's 79 KZ650SR they are mounted on stalks about 2" long that take the place of the headlight bolts. I don't know if that's stock, but they look good that way.
It has drilled rotors also.

On the '79, yes. There was a Kawasaki ad in Cycle World showing drilled rotors on a '79.

Check out this page for some pictures.

My '78 doesn't have drilled rotors, though, and it's quite stock.

Sure! I'll try to snap some this afternoon and post them somewhere online.

Are there any particular areas you're interested in, or just shots from different angles?

As far as the auto cam chain tensioner, I'm not sure whether I'd see that as a positive thing. A lot of owners apparently reported trouble with the automatic tensioners, forcing Kawasaki to try a few different designs throughout the years. These days a lot of guys convert to a manual tensioner. My '78 has a manual tensioner, and I believe that the '79 has the automatic.

I'm not trying to scare you away from it. I'm sure a lot of folks have functioning autotensioners too!

Let me know what kind of pics you want, and I'd be glad to take a few pictures. It'll give me an excuse to go wash the bike!

just an overall shot from either side would be cool. I am humming and haing about combining my KZ650C with the SR. Swapping out the tank, keeping the drilled rotors, swapping out the seat, headlight, handlebars, etc. I have three bikes now so I want to use the best of all three on to one.

I've posted some pictures that I took the other night:

(smaller)

(same pics, but larger)

I can take some side shots if you like. Let me know, and I'll drag out the camera during daylight sometime soon. :)
