ok guys, i asked this questions on the old site.

what fork swap is the easiest for a '78 650 to convert to the newer usd style forks. zx7 or gsxr. i have a chance to get both of them for a good price, just need a little help.

did the triples from a gsxf, pressed the suzuki stem out and inserted the old kawi back in but it needed a shim to get it in there. was a pain but i had time so i made sure it was done nicely... just gotta weld the bottom to finish it...

i hear zx's are easier than what i came across with. just do a search in the archives and you should see what had been done.

zx6d and the r models with the 41mm forks go straight in on the gpz750 and the forks from the gpz go straight on the kz650. Hence the 600 forks and triple tree go staight on, no bearing swaps even, if you have tapered bearings.

the KZ650 and the KZ750B use the same steering head bearings, and I know for a fact that the 83 GPz750 steering stem will not just bolt in the KZ750B, because I actually tried it

According to the list in the linked thread, the Zx6 that you refer to, does use the same bearings as the 83-85 GPz750, but it absolutely does not use the same bearings as the KZ650 (or 750B).

That being said, the 77-80 KZ1000 uses the same bearings as the 650 and 750B, and GONEHAWKN found some bearings that will allow the use of the GPz750/Zx6D/etc steering stem in the KZ1000.

He used a ZR7S steering stem, which uses the same bearings as the 83-85 GPz750 (I compared his ZR7S bearing numbers against the GPz750 bearings that I have).

And the 650/750B/1000 steering stems are nowhere near the same diameter as the GPz750/Zx600D/ZR7S.

Click on the links in my last post, all the info is there regarding what bearings each model uses, and the bottom link details a ZX7R front end install on a KZ1000.

If you are looking for detailed instructions, that might be a little difficult to find.

i agree with steell. you cant just swap them out. the gpz stems are totaly diffrent.

you can make about any front end work. just use your stock stem and have it pressed out of the old tripple tree and press into the new tripples.
first you grind the weld out of the kz stem and press it out.
the hole in the new tripple were the old stem is going into bottom tripple will either have to be opened up some if it is to small for the stem wich in most cases it wont be. if the hole is to big to press the old stem in tightly in to the bottom tripple tree you will a need hat bushings machined. you press the hat bushing on to the stem then press the stem and bushing in to the new tripple as one. then u weld it back up. if a bushing is needed for the top it dosnt have to be pressed or welded. just make sure that when the bushing is pressed on the the stem that isnt recessed to far. you need the exactly the same amount of the stem showing between the two tripples(other words make sure that you have the part of the stem were the bearing are going to set pulled through the tripple far enough so it will bolt up to the frame right. buy using your stem u can use the tapered roller bearing made for ur bike.

i just went through this on my kz1000 a few months ago and i put a 05 zzr1200 frontend on my bike.
