Help W/ Speedo And Tach
08 Nov 2006 16:03
Hey guys! Maybe someone here can help me out. I have a '79 kz 1000, but when bought the tach and speedo were missing from bike. I have been looking on e-bay for gauge clusters and have been coming across quite a few. I have also seen the gauges themselves up for auction. The problem is they all have different numbers. The redlines are different on the tachs and the speedometer readings are either to 90 or 160. Does anyone have a picture of their gauges for a 79 kz100 or have any advice?
Thanks,
Mark

I'm going off memory so someone may need to help me but...a 1000 77-80 should redline at 8500 and a 73-77 900 should redline at 9000. Also up to 80-something-ish all speedos registered up to 160 then the goverment took over and made most speedos read up to 85-90 after the cut off point. Hope this helps.

Yep, '79 was the last year for the 160 mph speedo (for the 1000 at least). The '79 also added the Kph scale in blue. '80 had the 85 mph unit. I'll attach a pic of my original 1979 MKII gauges.

I am pretty certain that the speedo on my 79 KZ1000E1 ST is correct and it is an 85 mph unit.
To get to the question; Most any speedo/tach will work IF the two studs on their backs have the same spacing as the instrument holding bracket. There are a number of different spacings and a few speedos/tachs are physically smaller diameter... not much but a bit.

79s should all have a 160mph speedo. It was 1980 when Joan Claybrook came up with that wonderful idea of the 85mph unit and other real bright ideas for motorcycle safety, one of which was a rear steer motorcycle. We are darn lucky.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.
