'77 KZ1000 harness compatability
08 Nov 2006 13:10
I'm looking for a new harness for my beautiful 1977 KZ1000 A that the PO got a little overzealous on cutting down the wiring harness  . I found a NOS harness for a KZ1000-B, part # 26001-1137. Will this work? I think it will and I can get creative with any discrepencies, but any expertise would be GREATLY appreciated.
I need to jump on this auction ASAP!
Thanks in advance! :silly:

Three main things to look for in swapping harnesses.
1. is the juntion box the same? (have the same connectors)... this is the box where most of the harness will plug in... blue plug for stator, green plug for regulator, white plug for rectifier and brown for accessory circuits on most KZs - If it is the same year, it is a pretty good bet
2. where the harness connect to switchgear? MOST connect up in the headlight shell but some connect down over the valve cover. It is a pain to marry the switchgear wiring and type that connect over the valve cover. They tend to be a bunch of individual wires. If you use one of these harnesses, it is easiest to find a donor harness from another bike and splice the switchgear connection ends onto the new harness.
3. headlight function. At some point, Kaw went to the headlight on all the time function. This means that the headlight/tail light are essentially hot wired off the ignition switch. If bike one of these harnesses are to be installed on has an ON/PO/OFF switch on the right switch gear, some serious rewiring needs to be done to use the switch and it will have to be used since that is where power for the headlight comes off (it goes from there to the hi/lo beam switch).
Oh yeah, I think the standard harness should be a plug n play on the LTD of the same year...

This harness is for a 1980 KZ1000 LTD. The 80 Kaw has electronic ignition and the 77 Kaw has points. This could possibly cause some wiring issues.

well.. that certainly does pose a threat, HOWEVER, i am running a Dyna S, so hopefully this is the same connector... I will reply when I get this harness with the problems and their inevitable solutions. thanks again, geniuses.
