stock coils
16 Oct 2006 15:53
are stock kawasaki kz coils weak? if i went with
accel/dyna coils and left the points system in place, would it make a big difference? my 76 kz900 seems to have a weak ignition system. i have looked at wg's
wiring upgrade as an option also. thanks for the input.

I put dyna coils on my old KZ650 once expecting it to make a difference, particularly is the cold morning starts. It made absolutely no difference in starting or running at least in my case, and my original coils were pretty well used by then. Using electronic ignition made a huge difference, but only in the fact there is no maintenence to it, running it made no difference otherwise.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I install Accel (Dyna are at least as good) on my bikes only when the original coil(s) is bad. If a coil is working properly then I don't see any reason to spend money on replacing it. I just don't trust cheap no name brand coils.

Stock KZ coils are awesome...Mine lasted 27 years.
But, having Accel or Dyna coils gives you certain bragging rights. They won't make your bike any faster or prettier but stock coils will probably cost even more from a Kawasaki dealer.
A set of carefully inspected and tested used KZ coils would work great too, if you can find some.
You could do like me and put on a set of any old coils you can get your hands on, but, its a bit risky...

Whether new coils make a difference or not will depend on the condition of your old coils and the condition of the bike.
