ok, I just dont understand why the Stator on a 76 kz900 would be oil filled like a clutch basket.

I stopped a leak of oil on the stator, when i removed the cover it was full of oil.
my understanding is that an electrical part like that for charging should be dry?
i dont get how a stator can make a charge being oil saturated.
You would think it would ground out any current going to the battery for a charge?

Oil doesn't conduct electricity, but it's still messy. Apparently some KZ's have the stator in oil. The 550's and 650's (assume 750's-4cyl) are dry. Others have reported that some 900's or 1000's have oil in there. Maybe it was for cooling?

ok, maybe i need to just go purchase a new battery and front tire sooner then, so I can see if i fixed the charging gremlin.
i replaced the regulator and one other black cagey looking electrical part under the left cover, it used to die if i turned on the lights, but now its staying alive.
the bike needs a good day out on the highway with a can of seafoam to ease my mind.

guess i go for tires and a battery today.
Tabs asap also.

The 750 twins need oil there to lube the starter chain and clutch.

Hi steell, Does this mean that the reason ran has his stator in oil, is different than the reason my stator is in oil?

I think there is a small passage behind starter clutch on the 900/1000 that allows oil to splash feed the starter gear.

I don't have a clue, notice that I make no attempt to answer 900/1000 questions, that's because I only have 750 fours and twins :D
