Ballast resistor

Hi guys, been a while. 
going to ask a question that has been asked many times but here goes. Does my kz1000g need the ballast resistor. When i was first teying to get this run i removed the resistor to try and get a stronger spark. But as fate had it i eventually had to do carb conversion, which was the best decision. However i forgot to put it back on, and the bike ran great with only the odd decell pop through the exhaust, which with tweeking here and there was making it better. Then i remembered to put it back on. Jesus, now it pops and bangs all over the place. Could it be faulty, or should i just remove it completly.

 

They are definately not needed.
As i understand it, they were put on to dampen the erractic  trigger pulse from the points which adversly affected the headlight when on. 
None of my 5 bikes still have them fitted and i see no head light difference.

The only thing I would add is ensure you have 3-4ohm coils. Some ballasted bikes like GPZ1100’s have 2ohm coils which draw more current which may be too much for a 40 year old igniter

Cheers chaps, i took the resistor off. The bike seemed to run better and less decell poping. I'll tweek the carbs a bit more and that should cure that problem. The coils i got are just under 3ohm, and i did check the igniter for excessive heat and all seamed to be fine there. I'll take a chance, and if something fails i'll consider my options.

I had problems with two cylinders dropping out.  My solution was to strip off the OEM ignition parts and add a Dyna electronic ignition with 4 ohm couls.  Runs like my Z1.
