Re: Time to replace the coil packs?
Today 07:03The 122.5 are "K" and the 127.5 are "J" so if you have 122.5 with "J" cams you will probably be weak ("J" cams have more lift and duration that "K" cams)Yes, quite a bit differently it seems. But this is a J engine and at its core it is a J bike. When I rebuilt it, I had a lot of parts from a KZ1000-K on hand as well so I took the components that were in the best condition from both bikes. Part of the frame, most of the electrical including the wiring harness came from the K. I don't remember if the air box came from the J or the K, but the carbs definitely came from the K.

Right, that is understood, but that wasn't the question. The J carbs had some damage which is why I didn't originally use them, but all the internal components are clean and usable. So I'm just trying to figure out, if I swap the main, needle, and pilot jets, plus the jet needles, from the J carbs over to the K carbs, is there anything else I need to change to match up these carbs to the J engine? I don't know if there are any differences in the height of the slides or the strength of their springs, or if there's any other components I missed.
I'm also a bit concerned that one of the plugs over the pilot jets was missing, and I don't know if that fell out while the bike was running or after I took the bowls off. I have more plugs available from the original J carbs I can use though.

The J carbs have different air jets which might be part of the reason for the different jetting. They also have a decel enrichener to prevent popping so its not a simple game of mix and matching, although it hurts no one to try and see what happens. Im actually very curious to see how it reacts because I happen to have a set of J cams laying around and wanted to swap them in but I dont have the heart to mess with the jetting.

The decel enricher... Is that the small round cover on the side with three screws? That was the only physical difference I had noticed between the bodies. Unfortunately running with the K carbs is the only way I've had this bike operating so I don't know if I can make any valid comparisons with how it "should" be working?
I guess I should look over the J carbs again and figure out why I didn't use them originally. If it comes down to a single body, maybe I'll try to find a replacement over the Winter.

Oh there it is... I grabbed the other three J carbs, and on one of them, one of the standing towers that holds the float broke off at the pin hole. After a decade I have no idea where the piece might have ended up and I can't imagine trying to rely on an epoxy being fuel-proof to salvage this.

OK I got all the parts swapped, but I noticed yet another problem. Vacuum lines go to three of the carbs, the fourth one is supposed to be plugged. The cap has been missing long enough that the vacuum nib is covered with baked-on oil. Sheesh. No matter what happens, I suspect the bike is going to run quite a bit better once I get this all finished up! Oh and I was checking parts as I went, and somehow missed that the pilot jets for both models are the same 37.5. Saved me from removing the rest of them.
I think all that's left is to check the float heights and get the bowls back on. And since the bike had been sitting all Summer I decided to strip down the tank and give it a fresh coat of paint -- Clear-coat is absolute garbage when you spill gas on it, never mind that it was supposed to be oil/gas resistant. On the other hand, the exposed paint held up just fine over the years. This time I'm just doing paint and wax, and calling it good.
