Can I replace the ‘body’ of a KZ440 Ltd starter motor with one from a KZ250??

Hi all,

long story - I have had my KZ440 starter motor decide to jam itself by having the magnets break up and jam against the armature - I have no idea how this happened but looking at the motor body it has quite a bit of what looks like rust damage so not sure if that had something to do with it, but looking at a ‘new ‘ starter around £300 including shipping from Spain the bike may be off the road for some time.

Now - I have seen that someone on here replaced the body of a KZ250 starter with one from a KZ400 - my question is does anyone think it is possible to go the other way?  I have seen a KZ250 ‘new’ starter for around £50. the gearing and contact plates from my 440 motor are good with no damage so I could swap them over to this new starter if it would work - but I’m not sure about if the windings would be man enough to turn the 440 over…..

does anyone have any suggestions or ideas if this would work??

Si

Just seen that ccbst10 has had the same issue as me! I have everything crossed that the answer we both need is going to be ok.
