Rebuilding/rewinding a stator, thoughts

My option for an affordable kz400D (sub $400) stator fell through.  Im now contemplating a rebuild of my current stator.  Has anyone done this?  I know it's difficult but possible.  Is it worth it or should I send it in for a rebuild?   Cost and difficulty are both factors i'm considering.

I would suggest getting a quote from Ricks for testing and rewind if necessary (they have a simulation rig for testing)
