Is there anything I should look out for before, during and after trying the starter? Also, what problems could be caused by a cut wire that leads to the fuel light, besides not having the light work.

How long has it been standing ? (you could put a "little" oil in the spark plug holes and spin it over with the plugs removed, then re-fit the plugs and start her up) Ref the wire nothing as long as it's taped up

You think a twist on wire crimp would do the job, I honestly have no clue how long it's been sitting without being cared for, but it has original rubber that feels brand new so it couldn't have been for too long

NO - "twist on's" are for house wiring. If you want to repair it use an automotive crimp connector
