Points set up
12 Aug 2025 19:19 - 12 Aug 2025 20:11
Admittedly I always put electronic ignition on my old bikes but for once I’m running points and I’ve never worked with them before and I could use some advice. I have a new set, although they are from China. I’ve read the manual several times and it looks like I’ve got it right, the 1/4 set gaps correctly at 0.35mm at the 1/4 F mark, but the 2/3 set will not close at all! It goes from wide to wider! There’s no more room to adjust.
I’m also seeing the springy arm of the points making contact with the adjustment screws on both sides (see photo) is this normal?
Help!

Check the manual again. I believe the F mark is where the points begin to open, verified with an ohm meter. Also, when the points are fully open, typical gap is around .015"

If your original points etc are original, clean them up and use them. Those Chinese points and condensors are rubbish and only last about six month.
You'll notice your old ignition plate allows you to not only adjust the gap but also the timing for each set individually as both points sets are mounted onto an adjustable plate and then that's mounted to the backing plate. The Chinese points are mounted directly to the backing plate which doesn't allow timing adjustment of each set individually.

I had to buy all new parts, and they are from China but they look the same as the manual shows. Each individual set it not attached to the backing plate. (please see the photos)

As Warren stated, typical Chinese pattern part dilemmas. One could re-arch the spring to keep it from touching the screw(s). One could mill down the rubbing block to correct to over opening point set. But You see all these (One Could's) add-up? Point sets at a glance seem pretty simple but a bit of correct geometry is required. Don't know what you paid for all this stuff but probably not worth sending it back. You originally had either Kokusan Denki or TEC points/plates.

Not sure this will be of any help or not. Here are pics of both types of point setup. I know these are not the best pics but what I have. They show points attached directly to the plate and the other pic shows the additional plate the points are attached to that is then attached to the back plate. This allows for more adjustment .

I've been warned about using Chinese parts, but I just don't see any other aftermarket manufacturers stepping up to make them (except vintage Harley). I wanted to try points but I think I will go with EI. Thanks for the input guys!
