Starting issues
16 Jun 2025 00:55
So I have been having a problem starting my bike recently and I think I know what the problem is. So I have a 1983 kz750e which is running great but sometimes it won't start unless I put the side stand up and down a few times even if I press the side stand button I will not start . I have to raise and lower the side stand. My guess is the switch for the electric on the side stand has an intermittent fault.
Has anyone ever experienced any issues like this. Or am I missing something.
thanks Larry

Not uncommon with side stand switches.
First, I would try cleaning the switch. It lives in a place where chain lube, dirt and such can get into it. I would remove the switch and open it up if possible. Be prepared for suddenly escaping springs. I would then hose down the interior with a dedicated electrical contact cleaner like Deoxit D5. If there is a great deal of grease and oil inside, I would shoot it with a strong degreaser first; something like brake cleaner.
if the switch cannot be opened without damage, I would press the button about half way in, and see how much Deoxit II could get into the switch by spraying liberally around the button and anywhere else that looked like an opening.
If that did not work, I would replace the switch, if a new one is available.
Finally, if those options did not work, I would wire in a bypass and learn to live without the switch.
