KZ1000 headlight dimming
17 May 2021 15:27
My headlight (new Wagner H6024) dims regularly on high beam. It gets rather bright around 1500 rpms, but otherwise fades in and out. At 4000 rpms, it's basically useless. Could this be a reg/rec issue, or stator? Also, the front left running light (right in the video clip) is noticably dimmer than the other one. I replaced both bulbs in order to rule that out as the cause. Any ideas?

I’d check the grounds. Black/yellow wires in the headlight bucket.

Check your wires for sure. The issue may also be in the control.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

If only it were as simple as ground wires. That definitely isn't the issue. Went through them all, cleaned them, tried connecting to different grounds, etc. No change.

How is it on low beam? Something to keep in mind, just because it’s new doesn’t mean it’s good. You have a voltage monitoring meter on the bike. What is it doing when the headlight flickers?

Grab your meter
DC V
bike running/hi beam on
black probe on negative battery post (post is the metal part of the battery)
red probe on positive battery post
note voltage
Raise rpms to 4k
note voltage
Headlight must be on and connected. Bike must be running
move red probe to the back of the headlight connector high beam wire( i can't tell what the color is-it appears to be black/red)
note voltage (should be close to battery voltage--if not then you have high resistance on the + side of the headlight circuit)
move red probe to black/yellow on the back of the headlight connector
note voltage----should be 0.0V( If it's .5 V or higher, then you have high resistance on the ground side of the circuit)

Check to see if the three wire (typically yellow wires) connector from your stator to R/R is fried.

Well Mikaw, seems that you called it. My 2 month old Wagner headlight ate it today. Put the old Stanley back in and all seems well.

Those Stanleys are incredible! I'm still running originals in my Z1's.

As I stated in my thread, I'm having voltage regulator problems. My Stanley lost either the high or low beam a few years ago and I couldn't get a Wagner, so I bought a Philips H6024. It was always dimming and brightening. I finally found a Wagner and it only lasted a few weeks. I then bought a Philips H6024CVC1, which is their "Crystal Vision" model. It lasted until this weekend (2 1/2 seasons) and burned out while I was troubleshooting the voltage regulator (I think). I put the old Philips H6024 in and the brightness was all over the place again. I picked up another Crystal Vision for $26 + tax at Lordco and it's excellent. It's much brighter than the Stanley and steady in the brightness. I still have the Stanley OEM squirreled away with my spare parts, despite it only having 1 filament left.
Back in the saddle and loving it! KZ1000A1
