Need lots of info and a helping hand

Hello, new member here and I have got a project that I'm hoping is worth the effort of trying to finish if I can get it running. Its a kz550 but not sure what model, and its on a go kart frame with what looks to be a cut down harness. From the ignition the wires go into the igniter, B,R,BL,Y all go to the igniter, the left over yellow and black they have going to the hot sides of the coils, green was going to negative side of coils and that was it, doesn't seem correct. From the other box there are white/red wire to battery, 3 yellows to the generator, black to ground and brown to nothing. So hooking up the white/red and starter wire i have no spark of course. What all is needed to get this beast running? Thank you

ok
wiring to the ignition pickups seems good
now the wiring to the coils is wrong.
red/yellow goes to the + side of both coils.
green goes to the negative coil for cylinders 2 and 3
black goes to the negative coil for 1 and 4
yellow/black is battery ground

try that first

Simplified wiring diagrams by loudhvx. KZR topic >> bare bones for mattylight >> Pg 1 .
A few of the diagrams may be missing. from pages 11-on most seem to be there.
You can probably use a diagram for most 1981-on 550s which had electronic ignition. some or all of the 1980 550s had points ignition.
Pg. 13 has a 550-A2 & 550-C3 diagrams. The LH side of the diagrams are identical.

ps: from the engine number I'd guess it's from a chain drive model, probably a KZ550A or 550C Ltd. and since it's a high number maybe an 83 model. guessing.

Like Martin said, the motor appears to be from a Kz550A standard or Kz550C chain-drive Ltd model.
A photo of the valve cover or carbs would make it more definitive.

I can draw up a simplified diagram like Martin pointed to, if you need it.

F64 has the ignition wiring described exactly right. Here's an illustration to add to what he said. Here, the diagram is for testing the ignition off the bike, but on the bike, the red power wire would get power from the kill switch. If you don't have a kill switch, it would just get power from the ignition switch.

I have this picture if it helps, and it is chain drive well has a sprocket any way. I just bought a brass ignition switch from the auto parts store so i can turn it to run and start it. Would the yellow wire from the igniter to coils also go to the ignition along with regulator white/red stripe?

The red/white regulator wire goes to the battery all the time.

The red (red/yellow) wire to the igniter and coils only gets power when the ignition switch is on.

I can just draw a diagram, but I need to know what ignition switch you bought.

In the U.S., the valve cover would indicate you have a 1983 Kz550A4 standard model engine. That is a second generation engine identified by the squarish angles on the valve cover and cooling fins. It can also be identified by the larger intake ports which require the larger type intake boots and larger carbs. It would have originally come with Tk26 diaphragm-CV carbs. In Europe there were other engines which the U.S. did not get.

In the U.S., earlier engines and chain-drive Ltd engines would have more rounded valve covers and Tk22 mechanical-slide carbs.

Regarding the ignition switch, I can't make out the one label. I see "IGN" and "BAT", but what is that third label? Also, is that switch meant to have a position for the starter, as in a car's "start" position?

I posted the diagram in the Mattylight thread:
kzrider.com/forum/4-electrical/172746-19...ght?start=468#838485

I assume "SOL" is the start position connection for the solenoid.
