Troubleshooting dash lights
02 Apr 2020 10:34
So I have no dash lights on this new to me '73 Z1. The lights inside the speed and tach both work. Pulled the meters and ignition switch. Found a few issues.
Cannot find any code on the ignition switch. Can I assume this is a replacement unit? Trying to ensure it is the correct switch and not an incorrect replacement.
Other issue, which I assume is causing issues- cut wires. I cannot see the partner to the cut wires.
The bulb sockets basically fell apart so Im going to have to replace the dash light harness. Trying to avoid an entire aftermarket harness but at this point Im starting to debate it. Thoughts?

The switch is probably a replacement. '73 Z1's had a chrome top piece for the ignition switch, but perhaps it was only the early ones. In any case, they only used key numbers 751 to 755 and the key number would be stamped on the narrow section of the switch. The switch wiring photo looks good, so the switch is probably not your problem.
The cut wires are most likely your problem. I've included a blow up of the wiring diagram so you can match colour to colour for your wires.

Thanks- I just don't want to chase my tail if that ignition switch looked incorrect. I had two Hondas that had incorrect replacement ignition switches in them, just about drove me crazy. Also discovered the wiring harness has no main fuse in it, so looks like I'll be going through everything anyway.

I know what you mean. I once bought a bunch of Z1 stuff from an ebayer who claimed the ignition was original. But the key number was 760, so I know it wasn't original. If you have the key for that ignition look for a number on it. And look for a corresponding number on the metal portion just below the threaded bit.

So- ironically- in a bucket of parts that I got with the bike was the original ignition. Plug had a little warpage like maybe it got hot at some point. My guess is that led to cut wires.

Was the piece with the threads chromed? And did it have a number on the side?

Yes, and had the key and cylinder both marked "751"- original Kawasaki key.
