Hi, will a starter from a 750 twin fit a 750 four from the same year if the item looks exactly the same type of fitment? Thanks

I don't know. But I think the crankshaft turns in the opposite direction from a 750-4. Counterclockwise on the Twin instead of clockwise on the 4-cylinder. So the starter may turn in the opposite direction. I really don't know, though.

It might work, but you'll probably have to swap the end housing & maybe starter gear. I would get a new housing o-ring.
The Twin starter is mounted in the opposite direction & this would account for the opposite crankshaft direction, so they
both probably spin the same. Additionally from EB pics, the Twin & 750-4 starter motors have the same info cast into the end housings.
I tried searching for replies by steell, but couldn't find anything definitive. steell & bountyhunter know the Big Twins.

ps: there are probably more starter motors for the 750-4 listed on EB than for the Twins. 0.5 KW & 0.6 KW.

Thanks again, it looks as though any motor starting with 21163 will fit all the z650/750. The only difference I’ve experienced is the location of the wiring nut, the replacement I bought has said wiring nut on top of the starter motor and so although it fits on the bike and starts the engine I can’t put the starter cover back on, I need the nut to be located on the side of the starter, I’ve since located one so all should be good.

Just curious. Is your starter motor a 0.6 kW? I'm guessing the shaft drive models used a more powerful starter than the 0.5 kW found on most of the 650/750 models. Also for future reference, the ZN700/750 & ZR750 Zephyr models may have a suitable starter.

Yes, 0.6kw, would such a small difference 0.5 - 0.6 cause any starting problems?

No problem. It should actually spin the engine just a tiny bit faster. It is not uncommon on hot roded 1000s to use a much stronger Honda starter.
