Hello All:

I have replaced my reg/rec with a Shindengen SH775, tested my stator = good, and new battery, also new reg/rec connectors . I am getting 13.4 volts at 3000 rpm and about 12,7 at idle. When I start the bike ,the voltage slowly and it is slowly, climbs from 12.7 to 13.4.
I also looked at my wiring and grounds.
Is this about normal for these older 1978 KZ1000 bikes?

What do you guys get for voltage at the battery leads?

Should I buy a Ricks Electric upgrade stator?

thanks,
Ronnie.

I emailed Rick asking if they had a higher output stator for the Z1/KZ 900-1000. Got no reply. It's been over a month.

With a reasonably charged battery (charged enough to start the bike) the voltage should hit 14 easily by 3000 or 4000 RPM.

Have you inspected the magnets in the alternator to see if they are loose etc?
Is there a chance your rotor is slipping on the crank?

Do you have a Dyna S ignition?

I haven't checked the magnets or rotor for slippage I will do this, thanks.

I do have a Dyna S ignition and coils. I have wired it with a relay to give it a solid voltage feed. I followed the "Repowering Ignition Coils For FULL POWER" document to wire it up, works great.

cheers,
Ronnie.

Same here, I also have the coils. I'm getting 13.5 volts at HWY speeds

Hello Steve:
I heard someone saying that Ricks Motorsport Electrics stators have more windings than stock giving it more output.

The Dyna S does use a lot more power. But complaints of weak charging with the Dyna S are most often seen on the 78 and 79 Kz650 models. I suppose it can happen on other models too. Sometimes rotor magnets get weak, especially if they got really hot some time in the past. I thought there was a company that could strengthen the magnets of the alternator to give more output, like when it was new.

You might want to rev the engine up to 5000 rpm and check charging voltage again. It should hit 14 VDC or thereabouts. That's what my 750 does and I've got a SH775 and fresh Rick's stator. I don't think Rick's winds stators for power though. That causes them to burn out early if using a shunt style R/R, as most bikes use.

I don't have my book in front of me with the test procedure but I think Kawasaki recommends testing the stator at 4,000 rpm. Each phase of the three phase stator should produce around 45 volts. The regulator should cut that back to about 15 volts.

The best way to test a battery is to check the fluid SG.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

I have ordered a digital voltmeter and I will put it on the bike and see what it does at higher running rpm's on the highway.
