Dyna 3 vs dyna s
18 Apr 2019 10:13
Hello all
Basically im doing away with points for personal reasons
Ive got a dyna 3 (electronic ignition with the box)
Basically is this old dinosaur worth hooking up or should i just buy the dyna s?
Not worried about coils as i have some
Im thinking dyna s is the way to go (no box less wires etc?)
Anyone using the older dyna 3 with good results?
Basically im worried itll fail lol

It would help if you put your bike's exact year & model in your signature line. Kawasaki used 5 different charging system on various KZ650 models / years. Some of those charging systems worked better than others with electronic ignition systems. Ed

What´s the Problem with your Dyna III, the external electronic box?
Both, the Dyna III and Dyna S do and perform the same!!!
Don´t waste your Money.

If the 3 is work in I'd go with that too and spend the cash else where.

I understand that you were not asking about the charging systems. However, the charging system provides power to the ignition system, and certain charging systems may not supply enough ooomph to enable the ignition system to operate properly. Unfortunately, your 1978 KZ650 has a charging system that may not work particularly well with some electronic ignition systems. The 1978 K650 charging system is a single phase system, and a number of folks have complained that while is will work with some electronic ignition systems it may not work very well with others. If you do not receive some feedback from folks who have done this switch you may want to post again with the question as the title or you may want to post the question on KZ650INFO. There are folks there who are very knowledgeable about the various systems. Ed

I have the same bike - a 1978 KZ650 and I installed a Dyna-S system not long after I bought the bike. It has performed flawlessly. I always ride with the headlight on, and have had no problems with lack of charging, but it does need a decent run every now and then to get the battery fully charged - or use a battery tender!

Unless you have doubts about the reliability of the Dyna 3 just fit it.
If it goes kaput later you can alway buy and fit an 'S' then.
No point in throwing cash away when there's no need.
