1980 kz1000 relay wiring mod
14 Nov 2018 18:15
I am stuck with the relay mod. If I run a wire to the double connector coming from the off/on switch, there is power coming from that wire. If I disconnect the yellow/red wire, the starter doesn't work. Is this wire supposed to be sending voltage to the relay? Does anyone have some pics of the wiring.

Here is the LTD wiring.
I have several restored bikes along with a 2006 Goldwing with a sidecar. My wife has a 2019 Suzuki DR 650 for on and off road.

I gave the relay mod a shot and no luck. All I can do is blow fuses. I used the relay in the pic below, hooked my link to the blue wire and ground the black, blow fuses. I don't get it. What am I doing wrong?

Wrong relay and wired up incorrectly is what you did wrong. Get the correct relay and connect it up as per the wired george diagram I posted below and it'll work.

Re: 1980 kz1000 relay wiring mod
16 Nov 2018 13:01 - 16 Nov 2018 13:11The above photo does not seem to be correct. Pin 30 is not in the center.
The wire colors of the above don't correspond to other connectors I've seen.
Look at the color arrangement on this 330-075 pigtail connector for the 330-070 style relay.
Notice the colors are different to the one you posted.
Here is how the pigtail connection and relay connections line up.
You can use a 4-pin relay which does not have the 87a terminal. Pin 87a does not get used at all, so the wire in the middle does not get used.
Pin 85 and 86 power the relay and are interchangeable.
One goes to ground and the other goes to the kill switch.
Pin 30 is the common contact to 12v power.
Pin 87 is the normally-open contact to the coils.
The other pin 87 or pin 87a don't get used if they exist.
